Windows7 Start Screen Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: Change Logon ScreenHi and welcome back to another article in the series of Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks. Today, we’ll be covering the easiest and simplest way to change the background of you windows login screen.

Since Windows XP, windows login screen has been a beautiful entry point to your desktop. The background picture of Windows Login Screen is not only soothing to one’s eyes but also a status symbol among the geeks and alike. Using cool Background Pictures in Windows Login Screen was never easy, until we got Windows 7.

Windows 7 comes with pre-built  functionality to change the login screen. You do not need any third-party tool filled with extremely difficult User Interface, hidden Trojans and Viruses, and cumbersome controls to change the login screen. All you need is to change an entry and Registry, create a couple of folders and most importantly, find that perfect picture that was always your dream background. Below is the method to change the Login Screen on Windows 7:TecRux Logon Screen 515x380 Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks: Change Logon Screen

  1. Press Win+R key and Type “REGEDIT” at run prompt (without quotes). Alternately, Press Start, click on Run and type.
  2. Locate following registry key:
    HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background
  3. Now in right-side pane, change value of OEMBackground to 1 (originally it should be 0).
  4. Now go to %windir%\system32\oobe
  5. Create a new folder info and another folder background backgrounds within newly created info folder
  6. Folder path should look like this %windir%\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds
  7. Now place your desired logon wallpaper within this background folder with file name as backgroundDefault.jpg. Here is an interesting thing, you can place multiple versions of pictures for different resolutions. Windows with place that picture according to the resolution of screen. You just have to mention the resolution in names

    background768×1280.jpg (0.6)
    background900×1440.jpg (0.625)
    background960×1280.jpg (0.75)
    background1024×1280.jpg (0.8)
    background1280×1024.jpg (1.25)
    background1024×768.jpg (1.33-)
    background1280×960.jpg (1.33-)
    background1600×1200.jpg (1.33-)
    background1440×900.jpg (1.6)
    background1920×1200.jpg (1.6)
    background1280×768.jpg (1.66-)
    background1360×768.jpg (1.770833-)
    Please NOTE: Images must be less than 256kb in size
    The backgroundDefault.jpg image is loaded and stretched-to-fit when a resolution/ratio specific background cannot be found.
  8. You are all done. Restart your system to see the effect.

    click on your hardrive -> windows -> system32 -> oobe

    in oobe there’s already a folder called info, do I delete this and start with a new folder info?

    Warning. 256kb is actually to big a file size for it to work… idk what the real max filesize is but if your login screen is still the default and you did everything correctly that may be the problem.

    Just put the picture in there rename it, “backgroundDefault.jpg” I just did it. DO NOT DELETE INFO FOLDER IN OOBE. Those are the optional BG’s. I just renamed the black one. And I didn’t need to restart my comp.
