Coolest Windows 7 Tips and Tricks – Boost Your System Speed
We have been talking about Windows 7 tips and tricks for some time (check out the related posts at the bottom of this page) but those were all beginner to intermediate level tweaks and tips that one could use. To be very honest, windows 7 seems to be pretty good when it comes to speed and reliability. It seems that windows 7 is built this way, which is true(according to Microsoft) and there aren’t a lot of things we could do. But there is always room for improvement.
In this post, we try to cover some of the advance tweaks that you can do in order to make the most out of your Microsoft Windows 7 based system. First thing first, lets talk about these tweak one by one.
Hardware Tweaks
Hardware is definitely the core of every thing. If you do not have a good hardware, no matter which OS you use, you’ll end up having trouble completing your day to day tasks.
Increase RAM (Random Access Memory) to Increase Performance
The minimum requirement of RAM for Windows 7 is 1 GB for 32bit (x86) processors and 2 GB for 64bit processors. Adding more memory is getting cheaper day by day so we’d recommend that you have at least 4 GB of RAM in either case (32bit or 64bit processors).
If, some how, adding more memory is not possible for you then you might consider using Windows ReadyBoost. It uses a flash drive to pre fetch items from your hard drive and thus maximized performance.
Use SSD (Solid State Drive) to Boost Speed
If it is possible, you should use an SSD instead of a Hard Disk to boost your Windows 7 speed along with minimize loading time for different programs. Using SSD boosts the Windows 7 load time and decreases the load time for all application programs. It is due to the fact that SSD or Solid State Drive work much much faster than ordinary hard disks. This help reduce loading time of programs when they are loaded from Hard Disk (in this case SSD) into RAM.
Software Tweaks
There are a lot more things you can do in terms of Software Tweaks. Although, they are not as good as the hardware tweaks but still, these tweaks manage to boost up windows 7 speed.
Disable Search Indexing
Windows 7 indexes all your files on your hard drive in order to speed up searching process. But if you search for files rarely, then it is a good idea to disable this feature as it takes a lot of resources. To disable Search Indexing, click Start and type services.msc and find Windows Search from the appearing list of service. Now, right click the Windows Search service and choose properties. From the appearing dialogue box, Disable the service and restart your Computer.
Switch Off Unwanted Windows Features
There are a lot of features in Windows 7 that you may not use or not even know about. When running, these features consume precious resources of your system. To avoid it, you should switch those features Off. In order to do so, go to control panel and click Uninstall a Program. In the appearing window, click on Turn Windows Features on or off. Now un-check the items you don’t want and click OK.
Remove Unwanted Startup Programs
A lot of program start when the windows is started thus they make it longer for Windows to boot up. One way to handle it, is by disabling startup programs. To disable startup programs click on Start, type msconfig and hit enter. From the appearing window, simply un-check the program you don’t want to start at start up.
Disable Aero and System Sounds
Although, Aero is one of the coolest feature of Microsoft Windows since Vista, it is true that it takes a lot of Hardware Power. So, if you are low on your hardware it is better to disable this feature so that your other work speeds up. Same is the case with System Sounds and disabling it surely help saving system resources.
To disable Aero, right click on your desktop and select Personalize. Now, select Windows 7 Basic theme. To disable System Sounds, click on Start and type mmsys.cpl. From the appearing window disable the sound and click OK.
